History
The Davide Barbero company has a glorious and long history. A few years ago, thanks to the discovery of some official documents from the curia of Mombercelli d’Asti, we can set the birth of the company no longer in 1883 but in the distant 1838, but let’s go in order:
1808
The beginnings
Birth of Filippo Barbero, the oldest ancestor of whom we have news.
1837
Birth of Melchiorre Barbero, son of Filippo.
1838
A longer history
Various documents from the municipal archive of Mombercelli attest that Filippo Barbero practiced, in these years, the profession of confectioner and “prestinaio” (i.e. baker who at that time certainly alluded to bread as well as cakes, nougat, torcetti and noisettes) at the church of the Annunziata in Mombercelli d’Asti.
1873
Birth of Michele Barbero, son of Melchiorre.
1883
The foundation
“Official” date of the birth of the Barbero company: Melchiorre Barbero requests and obtains the license to sell nougat and “noasetti”.
1885
Melchiorre Barbero is awarded the Diploma of Progress at the exhibitions of Naples, Turin and Livorno and the Vittorio Emanuele Prize of the White Cross “for the accurate manufacture of his specialties”.
1903
Melchiorre obtains the gold medal for the sample exhibition of Castelfranco Veneto.
1909
Birth of Davide Barbero, son of Michele. Davide Barbero is a prominent figure in the history of the company; under his careful and capable guidance the business grows significantly.
1913
The move to the city
With the death of Michele Barbero the business is carried on by his wife Luigia Tedaldi. The company changes its name to Vedova Barbero and at the same time moves from Mombercelli to the city center of Asti, in via Cotti Ceres.
1945
Marriage between Davide Barbero and Paola Gerbi (daughter of the cyclist Giovanni Gerbi, known as the “Red Devil”). Birth of Davide’s firstborn: Michela Barbero.
1953
The current headquarters
Davide Barbero moves the company from via Cotti Ceres to the even more central Via Brofferio 84 where it still resides, near the old Gerbi bicycle factory. Davide’s second son, Giovanni Barbero, the current owner, is born, together with his nephew Davide.
1976
Birth of Davide Maddaleno, son of Michela; current owner, with his uncle Giovanni.
1989 – 1992
Birth of Yaritza and Allegra, Giovanni’s daughters.
1994
The rebirth
Flood in the city of Asti in which the factory suffers extensive damage and risks closure. This tragic event gives a new impetus to the company that is reborn stronger than before, conquering new markets at a national and global level.
2015 – …
The future
The company Davide Barbero with his family has crossed the history of Asti marking it positively for 7 generations. On November 16, 2015, Davide and his partner Federica gave birth to their firstborn Filippo, the youngest witness of this fortunate and “very sweet” story that has ancient roots but constantly looks to the future.
