History
It was 1888 when Andrés Brugal Montaner, a Spaniard who emigrated from Catalonia to Santiago de Cuba, decided to move to Puerto Plata, in the Dominican Republic, where he founded Brugal & Co., taking advantage of his rum experience, acquired over the years in Cuba. It was the beginning of a long family tradition. In 1920, the first Brugal warehouse was built for the aging of rum in oak barrels. In 1976, thanks to Extra Viejo, the company developed the premium rum segment in the Dominican Republic. In 1998, Brugal launched Brugal Limòn, Brugal Pasiòn and Unico. In 2005, it designed 5-liter steel dispensing barrels for its mid- and lower-end brands. In 2008, the Edrington group bought 80% of Brugal. Franklin Baez Brugal remained president and the family continued to be involved in the company.

Production Method
Brugal Especial Extra Dry is the white, aged at least two years in American oak and then subjected to three filtrations that make it white. Anejo ages up to three years in oak. XV is a blend of rums aged in both American oak and ex-sherry oak. Brugal 1888 also experiences double aging, but unlike XV it is a rum aged initially 8 years in American oak and then approximately 4 years in ex-sherry oak. At the top of the range, Papa Andres, an edition dedicated to the founder, produced in a few dozen units directly from the family reserve of extremely old and incredibly valuable barrels, aimed at the ‘six-star’ collectors’ market.
