Although it is almost undisputed that Montalcino has Etruscan origins, the first historical attestation of the place dates back to 814...
A decree issued by the Holy Roman Empire under Luigi Pio assigned the lands sub Monte Licini – under Mount Licini – to the abbot of Sant’Antimo.
The town as we know it today was founded in the 10th century. In the 14th century the city became famous for the production and trade of leather.
In 1555, Montalcino welcomed within its walls six hundred families who had fled Siena from the conquest of Florence by the Medici and resisted as the “Sienese Republic of Montalcino” for four years.
In the years after the Second World War the area was hit by a deep crisis, the countryside was depopulated year after year and nothing remained of the city but a dot on a map. A city in the center of the feudal countryside bent by great poverty.

1971
Casanova di Neri was founded in 1971 by Giovanni Neri, a 48-year-old merchant of grain and elite seeds, who decided to leave the city of Montevarchi, in the Arno Valley south of Florence, to embark on a great adventure. Passionate about wine for many years, Giovanni Neri had a dream: to be able to produce a great Italian red wine. Although the renowned lands of Chianti Classico are just a stone's throw from where he grew up, it is the austerity of the Sangiovese that grows in Montalcino and its unpredictability that fascinates him.

The Brunello DOC, created four years earlier, includes more or less only 30 producers compared to almost 250 today. During his numerous trips to Montalcino, only one property, among the many for sale, attracts his attention: Podere Casanova. A property of about 200 hectares, east of the city. Wine is still a marginal part of production and is sold mostly in bulk. Giovanni Neri, however, understands that thanks to the altitude, the characteristics and the composition of the soil, that place has the potential to produce a great Brunello. In May 1971 he buys the Podere Casanova changing its name to Casanova di Neri. From the very beginning, also thanks to the help of some wine producers from Ilcine, he begins to tidy up the Sangiovese vineyards that he already owns and plants new ones. Thus begins the story of Casanova di Neri.
