Maycat is named this way for a curious story that has to do with gin and cats.
In 18th century London, many laws restricted the sale of gin, so alcohol sellers had to find a way around them.
Through vending machines, operated by the seller, they managed to sell gin to lovers of the juniper-based spirit.
The way it worked was this: when someone asked the cat - Hey kitty (puss), do you have any gin? - if there was, the distributor responded with a “Meow”. Then, whoever was behind the machine collected the money and gave the gin to the customer.
Maycat, unlike the traditional London Dry gins of Mayfair, recalls the ancient Dutch style.
It is a dry gin, less botanically heavy than standard gins and sweetened with sugar crystals.
On the nose it presents subtle notes of juniper and orange peel before becoming more floral, with notes of orris, fennel and almost sweet liquorice.
On the palate it is full and elegant, with a sweet and sour profile of orange, anise and almond, continuing towards spicy notes of fennel.
In the finish, notes of cumin, violet and coriander emerge.
