There was a time, not too long ago, before the year 1999, when ordering a gin & tonic was not nearly as popular and elegant as we perceive it today. Poorly served, lukewarm and flat, gin & tonic was certainly not synonymous with good taste; for everyone except one man, who deeply believed in the potential of a well-made gin mixed into a good gin & tonic. At a time when everyone thought gin had reached rock bottom and settled there, Martin Miller saw a real possibility in this spirit. “I’m going to make my own gin, so what’s the problem? It’s like this: I need to find the best distiller in England, source the best botanicals and find the purest water possible,” Miller said. “You’re completely mad,” he heard his friend say, “let’s do it.” A man far from ordinary, Martin Miller had art, creativity and an entrepreneurial spirit in his DNA; art collector, dabbled in photography and hosted some of London’s best pop parties. A decidedly eclectic character, he managed to project his passion for well-crafted collectibles into a gin that was destined to become a symbol of the category’s resurgence. Martin Miller was clear from the start about what he wanted his gin to be: “A classic distiller’s cut, straight from the heart of the spirit, as sharp as a Savile suit, but as smooth and refined as a Bentley.”
