The Japanese artist Yutaka Sone has been chosen to interpret the character L’Eleganza (The Elegance) of the Ornellaia 2013 vintage. As part of the 8th Edition of Ornellaia Vendemmia d’Artista he has created a work of art to be installed at the Estate, the labels for the exclusive edition of large format bottles and a label to present the vintage character in each case of Ornellaia (one bottle in each case of 6x750ml).

Artist Yutaka Sone

Born in 1965 in Shizouka, Japan, Yutaka Sone studied fine art and architecture at the Tokyo Geijutsu University. Now based in Los Angeles, Yutaka is a well-known artist for even those who take even a tangential interest in the world of art. A painter, sculptor and one of the best representations the word “artist” connotes. A man whose passion and rich intensity exudes to the point where it’s not only visible in the detail and philosophy behind his work, but simply from standing next to him.
He has had solo exhibitions at Kunsthalle Bern, Switzerland; Aspen Art Museum, Colorado; The Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago (all 2006); Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2003); and the Toyota Municipal Museum of Art, Toyota, Japan (2002). The artist representated Japan, along with Motohiko Odani, at the 50° Venice Biennale in 2003. He lives and works in Los Angeles.

Inspiration

“When I began this project, and as I have worked with marble all my life, I knew exactly where I needed to go to interpret L’Eleganza of Ornellaia 2013 vintage. I decided to visit the marble quarries of Carrara where Michelangelo used to take the stone for his celebrated sculptures. My two dear friends, Luc Tuymans & Rirkrit Tiravanija accompanied me on this special journey and together we enjoyed a picnic in this magical place, high in the mountains, surrounded by the pure white marble cliffs facing out to the sea and beyond. For me this place epitomises the sublime elegance of nature and it inspired me as we shared food, great wine, conversation and our close friendship. As you see from the labels I have created, I wanted to interpret the values of sharing, of friendship and the extraordinary uniqueness of this experience”.

Special Labels

Ornellaia has invited Japanese born artist Yutake Sone to be part of the Vendemmia d’Artista project and interpret “L’Eleganza” as the character of Ornellaia 2013. As with every edition, the artist has created a collection of large formats (100 Double Magnums (3L.), 8 Imperials (6L.) and a unique Salmanazar (9L.) as well as the single bottle label to be found in every standard case of Ornellaia 2013. Yutaka Sone has always had a profound interest in landscapes and chose to interpret “Elegance” by organising a picnic with 2 fellow artists in the majestic marble quarries of Carrara in northern Tuscany. The art works tell the story of that day spent celebrating their friendship surrounded by the supreme elegance of mother nature. The large format labels are story-boards of that unique experience using the mediums of photography, screen printing and sculpture.

After a dry 2012, winter 2013 was characterised by mild but very rainy weather, which caused a delay in budding of up to 15 days. The cold and rain also led to irregular and very long flowering – with a two-week delay compared to the average – which reduced production and resulted in uncoordinated development of clusters. Fortunately the summer, which arrived punctually at the end of June, was perfect, dry and sunny, but with a few peaks of intense heat in July and August. The slow vegetative development was ultimately beneficial because it deferred ripening until after the hottest period. The storms of August significantly lowered the temperatures, especially at night, which favoured aromatic expression, but led to a later than average harvest, between 9 September and 14 October, with mainly sunny weather without excessive heat.

VINIFICATION AND AGEING

The clusters were hand-picked into 15-kg boxes and then selected by hand on a double sorting table, before and after destemming, and finally softly crushed. Each grape variety and single vineyard block was vinified separately. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks at temperatures between 26-30°C for two week, followed by 10-15 days of maceration on the skins. The malolactic fermentation took place mainly in oak barrels, 70% new and 30% once-used. The wine then remained in barriques, in Ornellaia’s temperaturecontrolled cellars for about 18 months. After the first 12 months of maturation, the wine was assembled and then returned to the barriques for an additional 6 months. After bottling, the wine aged a further 12 months prior to release.

WINEMAKER’S TASTING NOTES

“What appeared to be a disadvantage for the 2013 vintage – late budding and flowering – proved to be a major advantage thanks to a warm summer and month of September offering textbook conditions for harvesting, with cool temperatures but a prevalence of sunny weather. This resulted in slow but complete ripening with great balance and a delightful aromatic quality, which we like to define as “Elegance”. Ornellaia 2013, with its dense, vibrant colour, has a nose of splendid aromatic complexity built around a limpid and brilliant fruitiness, underscored by refined spicy and balsamic notes. The mouth develops vibrant and complex fruity nuances framed by a dense, slender structure with tannins that attain a rare harmony between firmness and fleshiness, concluding with a long balanced and fresh finish.”
