The wine
On the Bolgheri provincial road, in the heart of the elite production of Bolgheri wines, the Folonari family cultivates approximately 7 hectares of Merlot destined for the production of Baia al Vento. A vineyard characterized by soils rich in mineral substances and iron which provide structure, elegance and aromatic richness. Merlot from Vallone dei Messi gives great pleasure to the palate as well as a consistent structure and the typical sensations of ripe red fruit which evolve and enrich with long refinements.
The 2020 vintage was characterized by a generally cold period between April and May and a generally warm and dry climate until July. The initial slight delay in the vegetative cycle was recovered starting from the summer. The sudden increase in temperatures, especially for the later varieties where fruit setting had not yet finished, favored a production characterized by sparse and light bunches. The stable and sunny climate of the months of August and September allowed the grapes to complete ripening in optimal conditions.

The territory
A natural theatre, protected to the east by the Metalliferous Hills which slope towards the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The conformation of this territory leads to a unique microclimate characterized by hot summers always refreshed by the continuous winds arriving from the sea channeled by the Tuscan archipelago. The soils change from clay loam to loose as they approach the coast. These particular conditions give structure but also elegance and freshness to Bolgheri wines.

The Vineyards
Bolgheri is a territory of international grapes. The pedoclimatic conditions have in fact influenced the viticulture of this part of Tuscany, identifying Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot as the perfect grapes for cultivation in this area which is reminiscent of Bordeaux. Power, elegance, finesse and great predisposition to aging are the peculiar characteristics of the wines obtained from these grapes used in blends but also in monovarietal varieties. The cultivation of international grapes is accompanied by that of Vermentino which in Bolgheri has found a great interpretation of the Tuscan coast.

The Estate
Tenuta Campo al Mare covers approximately 30 hectares in six production units distributed in the areas with the highest wine-growing vocation in the Bolgheri area. From the Le Fornacelle vineyard near the Tyrrhenian Sea characterized by sandy soils ideal for the production of Vermentino to the Segalari vineyard on the highest production area of Bolgheri, where Cabernet Franc expresses its most important characteristics, each plot is dedicated to cultivation of a varietal following its vocation
