The name of the plant derives from Gentius, the last King of Illyria, reigning between 180 and 168 BC. who was the first to discover and enhance it.

Given the purity and authenticity of the medicinal properties of the root, it was used by the Greeks to fight fever.

It is characterized by a bitter taste and a sweet smell,
thanks to the quality of the roots which, immediately after harvesting, are cleaned from excess soil, cut into pieces and dried in the sun until its interior reaches the classic yellow color.

The Chiarino gentian roots are then left to infuse for a long time with the wine to create an excellent liqueur that is still the most loved and drunk in Abruzzo today.
It is an authentic digestive, thanks to its own root which contains various active ingredients, and among these the most important are:

genziopicrina which stimulates the digestive function of the stomach by promoting the secretion of gastric juices and amarogenzine, the most bitter substance known.

With an amber color and an intense bitter taste, it is the end of the meal by definition,
and indispensable presence on every table, also for the richness of the typical Abruzzo menu.
