Bassano preserves the rare first edition of 1736 of Pharmacopoea Taurinensis*, where for the first time "Vinum Absinthites" is described, obtained by macerating artemisia absinthium (wormwood) and other herbs in wine.
Already towards the end of the 18th century the wine flavored with Wermut (Absinthe in German) spread to the French court where it became "Vermouth", then Italianized into Vermouth.
The vermouth recipe was enriched thanks to the Venetian merchants who imported precious spices such as cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, rhubarb, myrrh, ginger, sandalwood and zeodaria from the Indies, Indonesia and Africa; later came vanilla and cinchona bark from the Americas.
