The search for herbs from the best vintages along with the use of always natural and guaranteed ingredients, the original manufacturing process and the control of the results are a guarantee of the absolute quality of every single bottle of Unicum. Over 40 natural ingredients make up the recipe of Unicum, are herbs, roots and spices from all over the world and blended according to the formula discovered in 1790 by Dr. Zwack. No one knows the composition, apart from the descendants of the Zwack family who have guaranteed secrecy for over 200 years. When natural herbs arrive at the factory they receive a code that identifies them during processing. In this way the production workers do not know the real identity of the ingredients, but only the relative mixing percentages. The production process also dates back to 1790. Unicum uses an original process that involves mixing essences with distilled aromatic substances. Most of the components are extracted by distillation, directly from natural herbs in large stills, and are mixed with the essences obtained from alcohol maceration for 30 days. This process gives Unicum its distinctive aroma and characteristic bouquet. Aging helps to guarantee the intensity of Unicum's organoleptic characteristics. The mixture obtained by combining distilled substances and essences is stored in oak barrels for over six months. Here the bitterness reaches real maturity, acquires body and substance and is enriched with tannins that contribute to reinforcing the distinctive intensity and harmony of taste.
