Climate
The 2019 season in Chianti Classico was characterized by regular climatic conditions, with a rather cold winter with little rainfall and a cool and rainy start to spring, especially in the months of April and May. The summer was hot, without thermal excesses, and characterized by slightly higher than average rainfall which allowed for the correct growth of both the vegetation and the bunches of plants. Starting from the end of August and during the months of September and October, the optimal climate allowed the perfect ripening of the three varieties grown in the Solaia vineyard. The grapes were harvested from the end of September, starting with the Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese, until the Cabernet Sauvignon harvest was completed on October 14th.

Total annual rainfall: 1005.8 mm

Average temperature 1 April – 14 October: 19.7 °C

Rainfall 1 April – 16 October: 452 mm

Vinification
The attention was great, both in the vineyard during the harvest and in the cellar, where the grapes were destemmed and the berries, before being gently pressed, carefully selected at the sorting table to then be transferred by gravity into the tanks. In fact, it is essential that only the perfect grapes arrive in the 60 Hl truncated cone-shaped vinification tanks. During fermentation and maceration, maximum attention was paid to maintaining the correct balance between the fruit and the quality of the tannin in order to give the wine sweetness and fragrance as well as identity and character. Immediately after racking, malolactic fermentation began which, in barriques, enhanced the complexity and pleasantness of the wine. The aging process took place in new French oak barrels for about 18 months. After an initial period of refinement in separate lots, these were assembled to complete the evolution in wood.

Historical data
Solaia is a vineyard of about 20 hectares facing south-west between 350 and 400 meters above sea level. on a calcareous rocky soil with alberese rock and galestro, located at Tenuta Tignanello. The Antinori family produced this wine for the first time with the 1978 vintage; the initial blend was 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc, which was repeated in 1979. In the following vintages, 20% Sangiovese was introduced and some corrections were made in the ratio between Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, up to arrive at the current composition. Solaia is produced only in exceptional vintages and was not produced in 1980, 1981, 1983,1984 and 1992.

Tasting notes
Solaia 2019 has a deep ruby red color. The nose is distinguished by its complexity and aromatic finesse: notes of small red fruits, especially raspberry and mulberry, alternate with sweet hints of ripe apricot and blood orange combined with light floral nuances of rose; the evident aromas of coffee bean, chocolate and licorice are perfectly integrated, accompanied by fresh sensations of mint and white pepper, capable of giving the rich bouquet a pleasant and delicate spicy note. On the palate it is enveloping, harmonious, with an excellent and balanced structure; the sweet and vibrant tannins make it compact, persuasive and with an extraordinarily long finish. The aftertaste is very persistent, where the toasted and spicy notes perceived on the nose are found.
