BOLGHERI DOC SUPERIORE ROSSO
Ornellaia is born from the encounter between nature and thought. Ancient and complex soils dialogue through the wisdom of man with a delicate microclimate that finds an echo and mirror in the Mediterranean Sea. A long refinement
accompany the great wine of the estate to its maximum expression, revealing over time its finesse, breadth
and generosity.
TASTING NOTES
55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 10% Petit Verdot
Alc.: 14.5% vol.
Ornellaia 2022 presents a very expressive bouquet with aromas of black fruit and touches of vanilla and tobacco.
This olfactory complexity is found in the mouth where the wine expresses itself with a broad and decisive attack. Then the powerful
tannic structure appears and accompanies us towards a savory and long finish. Despite a 2022 vintage in which the heat was present for a long time, Ornellaia expressed itself as always with its main characteristics of elegance and freshness.
THE CLIMATE OF 2022
The 2022 vintage in Bolgheri was characterized by a rather classic winter with temperatures close to the seasonal averages, followed by a rather cool and dry start to spring. These climatic conditions
induced a later budding of the vines compared to the dates usually recorded. Subsequently, from the month of May onwards, a long period of heat and drought, of about 75 days, remained in our region,
putting the development cycle of the vineyard to the test. The plants suffered from significant water stress during the
growth, flowering and veraison phases, generating a vintage with low production loads.
Fortunately, following these complications, the rainfall due to the typical summer storms
unblocked the situation, reactivating the physiology of the vines that were able to resume the
grape ripening process. The latter unfolded during a September month ideal for the accumulation of sugars, aromas and
tannins, thanks above all to the coolness of the night temperatures.
The harvest therefore took place in very good conditions, allowing us to choose the ideal harvest date for
each vineyard and vine.
The harvest of the reds began on August 25 with the Merlot, continuing in September with the Cabernet Sauvignon,
and ending on October 10.
VINIFICATION AND AGEING
The harvest was done by hand in 15 kg boxes and the bunches were selected on a double sorting table
before and after destemming and finally subjected to a soft pressing. In 2016, in addition to manual selection, optical selection was introduced to further increase the quality of the selection. Each variety and each parcel was vinified separately. Alcoholic fermentation took place partly in stainless steel vats and partly in concrete vats at temperatures between 26 and 30°C for a week, followed by maceration for approximately 15 days, for a total stay in the tank of approximately three weeks. Malolactic fermentation took place mainly in oak barriques (70% new and 30% second passage). The wine remained in barriques in the Ornellaia cellar at a controlled temperature for a period of approximately 18 months. After the first 12 months, the wine was assembled and then reintroduced into the barriques, where it spent another 6 months. The wine remains in the bottle for 12 months before being released to the market.
