Grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah with a small amount of complementary red varieties

Climate: The 2022 vintage in Bolgheri was characterized by an absence of rain from the end of winter until most of the summer. From mid-August, the arrival of a series of thunderstorms was providential for the most crucial period of grape ripening. This climatic trend has on the one hand ensured a perfect state of health of the grapes but has also favored a reduction in vegetative development and production in terms of quantity. Thanks to the August rains, at the time of harvesting the grapes had a good balance between sugar and acidity and with intense fruity aromas. The harvest began with the Merlot on August 18, well ahead of the average, and then continued with the Syrah and other complementary varieties between August and September, to then finish with the Cabernet Sauvignon in mid-September.

Vinification and ageing: Each variety was harvested and vinified separately. The grapes were destemmed, gently pressed and transferred to the press where they underwent a short maceration of about 2-4 hours at low temperature to enhance the richness of the aromatic precursors. After pressing, the must reached the stainless steel tanks where the alcoholic fermentation took place at a controlled temperature of 16°C. The different lots have been carefully and regularly evaluated and assembled. Scalabrone was bottled in January 2023.

Historical data: Tenuta Guado al Tasso is located in the small and prestigious DOC of Bolgheri, on the coast of the Upper Maremma, about a hundred kilometers south-west of Florence. This denomination has a relatively short history (it was born in 1994) but boasts an international reputation as a new point of reference in the world wine scene. Tenuta Guado al Tasso covers an area of 1,000 hectares - 320 planted with vineyards, the rest cultivated with wheat, sunflowers and olive trees - in a splendid plain surrounded by hills known as the "Bolgheri amphitheater" due to its particular shape.

The Guado al Tasso vineyards are mainly composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Vermentino grapes.

They enjoy a mild climate due to the nearby presence of the sea: the constant breezes mitigate the summer heat and the rigors of winter, clean the sky and keep the insolation index high.

The first vintage produced of Vermentino in the Guado al Tasso estate was 1996.

Tasting notes: Scalabrone 2022 has a slightly pale peony pink colour. The nose shows intense notes of red berried fruit, among which ripe cherry and pomegranate stand out, accompanied by sensations of candied citrus fruit. On the palate it is pleasantly fruity, delicate and characterized by excellent freshness and persistence.
