Vintage
After a winter characterized by very heavy snowfalls, spring began with a long, exceptionally dry period. In March and April, the low temperatures significantly delayed budding, thus protecting our vineyards from the significant damage they would otherwise have suffered due to the numerous night frosts in April. On the other hand, the cool and rainy climate of May favored good hydration of the soil. In the earliest vineyards exposed to the sun, the flowering of the vines began between the end of May and the beginning of June, that is, approximately two weeks later than the long-term averages. The month of June was marked by very high temperatures and low rainfall, thus reducing the risk of fungal infestations to a minimum. However, July and the first half of August were completely different, with very frequent rains and storms, but precisely for this reason the temperatures in August were not scorching, favoring the development of fruity notes in the grapes and good acidity in the wines of the 2021 vintage.
In the earlier ripening plants, the harvest began on September 6th, a little later than in previous years, and was accompanied by very good weather conditions right up to the end.
The yields were slightly lower than in the past, but from the beginning of the harvest it was clear that 2021 promises to become a very interesting year.

Soil
Quartz porphyry, of volcanic origin, is the prevalent rock formation.
The light, lean, sandy and clayey soils determine naturally low yields.
The subsoil is composed of 55-60% quartz rock, with a slightly acidic pH value.
The wines of Terlano, full-bodied and full of character, enthuse experts with their longevity.
The soil, rich in stone and sandy clay, has a high quartz content. However, the calcium carbonate component is missing, and this factor determines slightly acidic pH values. In these conditions, the soil is much more draining, has a limited availability of nutrients, and therefore favors a more balanced vigor of the vine, with naturally lower yields. The Terlano terroir is therefore also distinguished by the unusual characteristics of the soil, which force the vine to react to these stressful conditions, producing those specific polyphenols that make Terlano wine unmistakable. This is why those grapes produce wines with marked flavor, tension and depth. And the particular blend of crystals and minerals underground gives life to white wines whose extraordinary longevity continues to excite experts around the world.
